Shakedown Cruise, Part 1 (Episode 1)

Post by Solomoriah »

Lieutenant Julius Castle didn't know why Admiral Baldwin called him to his office, and he was more than a little nervous about it. "Lieutenant Castle," said the pretty receptionist, "go right in, the Admiral is waiting for you."

Castle had hardly saluted before the Admiral said, "At ease, my boy, at ease. Sit, please." The senior officer sat, and Julius followed suit. Baldwin lit a cigar, and offered one to Castle.

"I know you've heard about the Nova program," he said. "Seven Nova-class scoutships have already launched, and the eighth will be launching tomorrow. I've called you in today to offer you the command of the ninth Nova-class scoutship, the Pegasus." The Admiral gave Castle a moment to absorb the offer, but before the junior officer could respond, he continued, "Of course, you'll be receiving a promotion to Lieutenant Commander, as required for the position."

The Admiral leaned forward over his desk. "What do you think, son?"

Julius pauses for a moment, deep in thought, and then replies "Sir, It would be an honor to command a ship." "I will do my very best to represent the people of Earth in a goodly light amongst the stars."

Julius then salutes the Admiral.

The Admiral returned Castle's salute with a chuckle. "I'm sure you'll do fine, son." He held out a file folder, saying, "Your orders are in here, and a crew roster for your review. I'm not sure if you know any of them, so you'll want to read up. You'll be taking the Pegasus on a tour of six stars which have already been visited, making a standard survey run; we're allowing about ten hours on station at each for your mission specialist to do a standard planet search, check for radio signals, you know, standard survey stuff. We already know what you might find at each star, so this is a test of your crew and the equipment aboard Pegasus.

"So, son, unless you have questions for me, I think you should get packed. The transport to Tranquility Shipyard leaves at 0730 tomorrow."

In order to keep things moving, I'm going to interleave scenes. This scene comes some time after the one above, but that scene is still in progress so -1warrior can finish it.

Admiral Baldwin stood as Lt. Grimm entered his office, and he returned her salute and said, "At ease, Lieutenant. Sit, please." When both had settled into their seats, he said, "I know you have your orders already, Lieutenant. Commander Castle has already been here and gone, but you'll get to meet him on the transport tomorrow. But I felt I needed to call you in to talk to you about a few things.

"Let me be blunt, Lieutenant. Pegasus is a small ship, smaller than a Scorpius-class ship; you'll be in close quarters with four men, three of them sleeping in the same space as you. Are you prepared for that?"

Lando Scott was repeatedly working the bridge hatch, trying to find the source of a squeak that had been driving him crazy, when he heard the airlock cycling. Reflexively he looked through the small window and saw a man in a spacesuit, obviously; the suit had civilian markings, and Lando wondered who it could be.

Finn, that's you in the airlock. You guys are on.

Lieutenant Steele disembarked from the transport at the Tranquility Shipyard terminal. As he walked across the lunar surface, kicking up a cloud of regolith, he found the thing he looked forward to most in his new assignment was a new spacesuit. He had one of the older models, stiff and awkward... the new ones were rumored to be much more flexible.

Inside the terminal, he removed the suit as quickly as possible. "Steele?" said a woman's voice. He turned and saw a vaguely familiar face. "I haven't seen you since college," she continued. Seeing his confusion, she smiled and held out her hand. "Deborah Connors. We attended some of the same classes at college."

Steele's background doesn't include college, but he's an officer, so he almost certainly has at least a 2 year degree.

"Sir, thank you for asking. I won't ask for preferential treatment just because I'm a woman. I've known since I was a little girl that serving as a female wouldn't be easy." She pauses for a moment, reflecting on a memory. With a brief smile, she continues. "This won't be my first time in close quarters. Just the longest. Besides, I can take care of myself, and them too. As long as they don't try anything dumb, I'll bring them back healthy and in one piece. Sir."

Lando saw the civilian entering the airlock and thought to himself, 'Great, a civilian. Didn't even bother to join up and he probably outranks me somehow.' Lando knows it will be a couple more minutes before the newcomer will cycle through the lock and get his suit off so he continues to work on the latch, managing to find a small metal burr that hadn't be ground down in the manufacturing and installation process. He takes out a iron file from his kit and works it back and forth a bit.

He is just finishing up applying a dab of sealant paint when the hatch opens and the civilian comes through. He puts away his tools and cleans up his work location, then stand and puts out his hand, "Welcome aboard the 'Pegasus'. I am Lt. Scott, ships Engineer. May I help you?"

"Okay Sir. I'll go get ready."
