Barguk heads into the tunnel.

The tunnel loops around and rejoins the main stair, just as indicated on the map.

You are now at the bottom of the loose set of stairs. The hewn passage to the front extends to left and right.

You can't hear anything but you can definitely smell something. Dog. And excrement. You can even see some on the floor. The gnoll is around here somewhere.

Can I smell the Gnoll stronger through the right or left?

Nope. About the same.

Barguk carefully walks down the left hallway.

Well, there was a gnoll down the left hand side, waiting in the dark, and he rushes at you.

You are not surprised (I rolled for you).

He has a slight height advantage, coning from the top of the stairs. He is also 7 foot tall, and looks emaciated and desperate. He smells pretty bad.

Roll for initiative and declare your actions. He is 5' away from so you are not yet engaged.

Got a 2 for initiative.

Barguk (recognizing his disadvantage) braces himself for the gnolls attack.

I also rolled a 2, so we are tied.

I need to know what you are actually doing. Attacking? Defending? Check the rules thread. The gnoll has claws, and could rip you to bits if he rolls well.

Barguk is going to defend for the round.

The gnoll rushes you and scores a hit for 5 hit points.
