What Is Basic Fantasy RPG?
|
 |
The Basic Fantasy Role-Playing Game is a rules-light game system
based loosely on the d20 SRD v3.5, heavily rewritten with inspiration from
early RPG game systems. It is suitable for those who are fans of "old-school"
game mechanics. Basic Fantasy RPG is simple enough for children in perhaps
second or third grade to play, yet still has enough depth for adults as well.
Basic Fantasy RPG is an Open Source game
system, supported by dedicated fans worldwide. We'd love for you to join us.
Curious? Take a look at the sample character sheet (click here).
Or, read the introduction story, collected from the rulebook.

What Does It Cost?
|
 |
Nothing. You can download the PDF files or the original OpenDocument (i.e.
OpenOffice.org)
files from the downloads page at no charge. Or, you can
purchase a print copy from my storefront
at Lulu.com, where I have published the rules at my cost. That's right...
I don't make a single penny of profit from the sale of the printed copies.
I'm a believer in sharing. Some have expressed the opinion that I'm a fool not to profit
from these rules, or the supplements or modules; but I have a job already, and it pays my
bills. I'm not sure there's enough demand for this game to make it worth the effort of
selling. But more than that, I'm committed to sharing. If I profit from the game, I enrich
myself (cash) and a few who purchase (enjoyment). But I give it away, and I thus enrich
many (myself, with a warm glow of generosity, and many others with the enjoyment of playing it).

Where Can I Learn More?

If you aren't already following the discussion on
Dragonsfoot.org, what are you waiting for?
Much of the development of Basic Fantasy RPG has been done there, in the
Workshop and
in the Simulacrum Games forum.

Workshop threads.
Or, of course, you can join us on our own forums... I'd love to see you there!

How Can I Contribute?
|
 |
I prefer all submissions to be in original source format if possible; text submissions must be
in either Microsoft Word or OpenOffice.org (OpenDocument)
format. If you aren't presently a user of OpenOffice.org, and are running Microsoft Windows,
let me recommend the "OpenOffice.org remix" called Go-oo. It contains
importers for a broader variety of formats than the "vanilla" OpenOffice.org product.
Just send your submission to
solomoriah@basicfantasy.org,
and I'll get it processed and add it to our downloads page. Or better yet,
post your work-in-progress as a new thread in the
Dragonsfoot.org Workshop,
and we'll pitch in and help you get it finished.

Reviewed on Fandomaniacs!

Fandomaniacs has reviewed Basic Fantasy RPG in their podcast #5 from November 13, 2007, and it
seems that Rob liked it. More importantly, I got the feeling listening to the podcast that he
really "got" what we are trying to do here. To listen to the podcast, or any of the other
good Fandomaniacs podcasts, click the banner below:
