I approach details in two ways: First, I go at it in layers. General description of the room, place, etc. If the players decide to observe something in detail, then I get into more detail. It could be cool to have an initially only-human setting, and then have the players, after a long time, find an elf for the first time, for example. Make it something alien, intriguing.
