Revised Thieving Tables

Post by cbarchuk »

*** 7/13/21 UPDATE - Tweaked both versions and consolidating them into one PDF ***

After extensive playtesting these are the two versions that I am satisfied with. Dimirag mention these points:

MAD = Multiple Ability Dependent.
Dead level = A level where the only benefit its the increment in HP.

The D6 version removes stat dependency. There are dead levels however. This is especially true when using a D6. Unfortunately it's hard to avoid when starting with higher scores. I could've stretched out the progression further so a small increase is earned at every level but I found those increases to be inconsequential. Just my humble opinion. Regardless, your Thief will be overall more effected at their job compared to RAW. Without further ado:

Percentile Version:
  • Climb Walls starts at 78% and all other skills start at 60%. They progressive upwards following the Thief's attack bonus progression and max out at 95%.
D6 Version:
  • All Thief skills start at a 3 in 6 chance and progressive upwards at certain points according to the Thief attack bonus progression.
Pick your flavor and the best thing about both of these...simplicity, which I prefer. :D

Enjoy!!!

Looks interesting, I like the d6 method, but am I missing something here? Is there no longer improvement in the skills as they progress through levels?
(My knowledge is the core rules, feel free to point me at any supplements)

Not for the d6 method. Whatever you end up with at level 1 will stay the same as you level. Boring but your thief will be solid no matter what level they are. Even a simple +1 bonus will automatically give you a 50% chance for success. Now in my version Dex, Int, Wis, and Str affect your skills. You could simplify it even more and only use Dex.

I like it. It feels like heresy, ;) but I like the simplicity. :)

Although the Thief will be "solid" it also would be a MAD character.

The Thief would only have a couple of dead levels (11, 13, 17, and 19), a fighter has dead levels at 3, 9, 15, 17, and 19, but the thieves' dead levels are less rewarding.

The d6 is a viable option if you don't mind the above things.

Notes:
MAD = Multiple Ability Dependent.
Dead level = A level where the only benefit its the increment in HP.

I have updated my Revised Thieving Tables. There will be one attachment with both a d6 & percentile version. After extensively playtesting these are the two versions that I am finally satisfied with. The d6 version is altered bit with a standard progression that is unaffected by stats while the percentile version was tweaked slightly from the original. Both versions follow the Thief's attack bonus progression. If you get a chance please download and let me know your thoughts good or bad. Enjoy.
