The Russian Translation
The Russian Translation
Dear authors of the game!
I have begun the Russian translation (Part 1 — the first version has been done, Part 2 — the most part of text has been translated, except the description of the siege weapons and tables, some small parts of Part 3 and Part 4 text has been also translated). All the translated material are naturally completely unpublished (through some of my friends have seen it for the quality check — it seems the results are positive).
I sent the e-mail with the ask of the translation permission some weeks ago, but have not received any answer, so I decided to ask the permission here. May I translate your game into Russian? Naturally, every commecial use of the translation product is going to be done only with authors' permission and, of course, I do not want to violate the OGL conditions.
Naturally, I can send all the translated parts here or to an e-mail. Also I have translated the Gnome supplement for the quick estimation of the translation quality. If you want, I can place it here or send to an e-mail.
Sincerely yours,
Dorei

Re: The Russian Translation
Dorei, I'm sorry, but I did not receive your request. Did you send it to:
solomoriah@basicfantasy.org
Regardless, I see no problem with you translating the game into Russian. I do need you to send me your work-in-progress, for archival purposes; many times, translators begin the project and then disappear (as if by magic) before it is done. Even with the best of intentions, sometimes real life gets in the way. If you send me your partially-completed work, and subsequently something happens to prevent you from finishing, another can take the project over at some time in the future.
You are welcome to upload the as-yet-unfinished work to this thread, or email it to me, or if it works better for you I can set up a shared Dropbox folder for you to put it in. Just let me know.

Re: The Russian Translation
It seems the address was correct. At least, the GMail detect the addressee of that letter as Chris Gonnerman.
The board and e-mail write that the wp version of the core rules is too large so I've uploaded it here:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1nVZYon ... sp=sharing
(It can be relocated if necessary.)
Also, I have added the odt Russian version of the Gnomes supplement (rus file) and the version for the quality check (both Russian and English texts -- comp file).

Re: The Russian Translation
Looks good so far! I think with continued work Solo could give you a Showcase account, and then you could upload the ODT and the generated PDF there.
I recommend using the Courier Prime Cyrillic font; it's one of my favorite fonts (the English version), and it is available under the SIL Open Font License.

Re: The Russian Translation
Dorei, you now have Showcase access. Feel free to upload your work there.
One note, on versioning of your files. The standard format for a translated manuscript which we use is to take the English name and tack on the language and translation revision number, like this:
Basic-Fantasy-RPG-Rules-r107-rus1.odt
Each time you upload a revised version of your translation, you should bump the revision number (so -rus2, -rus3, and so on). This ensures that no two copies of the file exist with the same name and different contents... for that way lies madness.

Re: The Russian Translation
The current version of Core Rules is translated very incomplete. Also the big part of the translated part is a work in progress materials before a quality check ;-/. Is it appropriate for the Showcase?
Re: The Russian Translation
Normally yes the Showcase is for fairly-complete items. However due to the size of the files and the amount of work you've already done we deemed it OK to grant you access.
Since you've started and "in the thick of things", we know your local file is going to change/update pretty often, perhaps even daily. I recommend uploading an initial ODT and PDF to the Showcase soon, so that we can have its link on here. Then, as you work on the translation you can update the Showcase entry every few days or so, depending on how much work you get done.

Re: The Russian Translation
Sincerely saying, I am not very like such type of fonts.I recommend using the Courier Prime Cyrillic font; it's one of my favorite fonts (the English version), and it is available under the SIL Open Font License.
I am not a font expert. If you want an example of realy good Cyrillic grotesque, you can look at the Soviet Rubl'onaja standard (described the Soviet versions of the Royal-Grotesk, Akzidenz-Grotesk and the Dubovaja (Oak) garniture). http://www.internet-law.ru/gosts/gost/43991/
I don't know is there a good free version of Royal-Grotesk and Akzidenz-Grotesk.
For the school and children's books, a special font exists, Škol'naja (School). There is also a standard.
http://www.internet-law.ru/gosts/gost/17844/
It is a late Soviet design and I don't know if the creation of a free version is possible.
If you want I can consult a real expert, but it takes some time.
Re: The Russian Translation
Hello!
I was not active for a long time (some translation organisation and real-life problems).
Now, I publicise the new version of the working materials.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/29f7oly8ows0g ... 3.odt?dl=0
The current state of the translation:
a) Translated: Pt. 1, the most part of Pt. 2 (except mainly some tables in the Equipment section), the rules of preparing and using spells in Pt. 3 (but not the spells descriptions), Dungeon Adventures, Wilderness Adventures, Character Advancement and part of Retainers, Specialists and Mercenaries in Pt. 4, small part of the Pt. 5.
b) Now translating: Retainers, Specialists and Mercenaries. Now quality checking: the main text in Equipment.
In the section Dungeon Adventures Century Schoolbook was used as the main font. Maybe someone has this font and can notice it.
There are questions about some terms.
a) Which sorts of weapons are named ´mace´ and ´maul´ in the game? Is ´maul´ a sort of cudgel or a sort of hammer? Has ´mace´ spikes? Which sort of ´polearm´ is implied?
b) Is ´longship´ just a ´generic viking-like ship´ or a certain type of longship is implied?
c) Is the name ´gale´ in the game linked to the Beaufort scale or it is used just as a synonymous for ´storm´?
d) Which characteristic is the most important to define situation as an encounter?

Re: The Russian Translation
Not sure what you're asking here. Century Schoolbook isn't one of the standard fonts, but I know that working with Cyrillic you'll probably have to change fonts anyway.Dorei wrote: ↑Sat Oct 27, 2018 10:32 am Hello!

A maul is a two-handed warhammer. A mace is a metal-headed weapon, which may or may not have spikes; there's no difference in damage, but spiked maces can't be used by clerics. Polearm is a general entry that refers to long-hafted weapons with blade or axe heads, i.e. pikes or halberds.
The former, generally. A campaign set in a viking territory might need more detail, but the game assumes a somewhat central European area where vikings are raiders from more northern lands.
'Gale' in English refers to a very powerful wind; I can't tell you how it relates to the Beaufort scale, as I'm not an expert in meteorology. The wilderness movement rates are abstracted from other OGL sources, i.e. not fully original work on my part.
You (your party) met someone or something. Literally, you encounter it. The rules for that section tend to be mostly combat, because the most "interesting" encounter mechanically is when you meet someone and don't get along.
