There are lots of ways to resolve checks relating to abilities/skills/contests, and the topic has been debated to death on various forums.

Thanks! I’ve found these mechanics make things fairly fluid, though your mileage may vary.
I’m not opposed to roll under in theory, but I know it’d confuse some of my gaming group as they lean more casual. I’d play with any set of mechanics in someone else’s game though. Your home brew resolutions could involve a deck of playing cards, guessing a number between 1 and 10, or drawing numbers out of a hat and I’d still roll with it
