Foundry Module - Field Guide Volume 1

Post by miqued »

The original files below may still be used, but users of FoundryVTT V10+ may find it more convenient to go to the repository where updates will be pushed out from. The module has also been approved for installation from within Foundry now.

---

Good day everyone, I have just finished putting together a module for Foundry VTT containing all the monsters in a compendium for the Field Guide Volume 1. The entries are based off r29 (print version) of the Field Guide, because it was easier on my eyes to look at paper for as long as I had to than a screen.

The module here contains minor corrections for e.g. spelling, which may well already have been corrected in later releases of the document itself; additionally, monsters with multiple modes of attacks have notes explaining their attack routines, and monsters that can cast spells all have a pre-made spell list so you can just use them as-is without prep. Finally, each variant of each monster has its own entry, except for the lich, zombraire, and skeletaire. For example, there are 16 entries for thulids (17 if you count the brain), 1 to 8 HD versions and the spellcasting-capable variants with pre-selected spells.

There are FOUR variants of the module, but you only need ONE. They are all contained in a single archive. I will explain the differences here:
  1. The files ending in V10 are fully compatible for Foundry V10 using the updated JSON structures and schemes. I would not count on these being compatible with V9. Should the module be updated, only the V10 versions will be pushed out.
  2. The files ending in V9 are made for Foundry V9 but work perfectly fine with V10 (albeit with errors, which do not impact functionality)
  3. The "Standalone" files can be loaded as-is. All the creatures are in one big list.
  4. The "CompendiumFolders" files depend on the compendium-folders and lib-wrapper Foundry modules. This preserves the folder structure that I organized all the creatures in. The V10 version should be able to download these additional modules automatically, but both V9 and V10 versions of this module do at least properly check for them to be enabled.
All variants of the module can be installed by extracting them into your Data/modules folder for Foundry. For me, this folder is located at "/home/miqued/.local/share/FoundryVTT/Data/modules".

There is now a Github page for the standalone version of this module, which can be found here: https://github.com/miqued/bfrpg-fieldguide1-foundryvtt

I tested it with FoundryVTT V10 and can confirm it is able to properly install the module. Let me know if there are any issues. A page for the version with included folders will come shortly

Today, we may celebrate. After getting help in the FoundryVTT discord server, I was able to actually combine the "folder" and "standalone" versions of this module, using some very clever javascript. The same repository as before may be used, as all changes have been pushed. If you downloaded the r1 release from Github, try updating within Foundry first to test the update process (it will not work on the files from here, since the links point to nowhere useful). I was able to get it on my end, but you never know when something may go wrong...

The module on Github is still just tested with V10 Foundry, so no promises it'll work on V9.

Congrats! I'm not a Foundry VTT user but I hope that people that do become aware of this tool.

Thank you, and I'm now also proud to report that the module has been approved for installation from within the Foundry software itself, bringing things to a close on the technical side of things. The page on Foundry can be found here.

Announcing!

Field Guide Volume 1 Foundry Module r4 -- June 23, 2023
Brought the module up to the present with Foundry V11. r4 and later versions are incompatible with Foundry V10 (and earlier), but there is no difference in the content. The only difference is the way Foundry packages and handles it.

(yes, I stole Solo's announcement style. I like it)

Omg I wish I had found it sooner. With additional features, the updated version works much better.

Well I'm glad you found it now. Let me know if you encounter any issues. Your username reminds me of a monster I wrote here (https://basicfantasy.org/forums/viewtop ... 428#p88428)
