I have been similarly affected by lack of progress. No Worries... we all do this as hobby and passtime; no deadlines.

New draft might be forthcoming soon, I spent an hour or two fooling around with it tonight.

The implementation of one spell in particular is giving me pause, otherwise it's ready to go up.

Screw it, I'm just giving that spell a bye and giving them Finger of Death instead. It's finally ready for your criticism.

As do I. The spell choices are good. I like the simplified bonus (cost reduction) to Potion making.

However, I still think some sort of effort to incorporate the whole witch's cauldron can be added. Perhaps something like, when the witch can utilize her cauldron into spell casting (increasing any spell's casting time to 10 minutes or more), she gets a bonus to her effective level. (likewise, campfire, small bonfire, stove, etc. needed)
- Small/portable cauldron = +1 level
- Large cauldron (largely immobile without help of strong porters, wagon, etc.) +3 levels

Also cauldron related, I think a few special magical cauldrons are likely. Cauldrons that can be utilized as 'channeling items' for certain spells, 1 or more spell effects per day, other special powers such as protection from X (10' radius around the lit fire/cauldron). Lots of ideas here.

Regardless, I like the class portion you have. Simple, following the formula of basically MU with differing spells, just like the Illusionist, Necromancer, etc. Works for me. The other parts are more of ancillary options, like magical items, specific to the witch (and unusable by other such casters).

Another thing to potentially consider, is some sort of variance between those practicing dark/black (ie evil witches) and those whom practice white (goodly efforts), and perhaps some sort of nature sect (going for that sort of Earth Mother worshiping Wicca thing).... just another twist to think about too.

I like your idea with the cauldrons, I'll work on it today. Different schools of witchcraft might be a neat idea but might not be convenient-- spell lists have never been my great strength.

When I think of the scene at the beginning of Macbeth, I see the witches standing around a cauldron surrounded by a thick, cloaking mist. Like Obscuring Mist. Maybe you get that effect just for using the cauldron.

The witch's brew would add effects to the mist -- sleep, poison, acid, forgetfulness, love, hate, slow, shrinking, polymorph, time sped up/slowed down, etc. The witch wouldn't be affected, of course.

But maybe that's not the kind of witch you had in mind.

Making something that's viable as a PC kind of matters to me. That's part of what the whole cauldron brouhaha has been about, relying on a big cast iron pot really screws their mobility.
