Would it be legal to write a advantage/disadvantage mechanic

Post by JenniferRPG »

.. supplement for BFRPG? (Not that it is necessarily needed, but I have noticed others here mentioning that they use it in BFRPG.)

A unique implementation you come up with? Yes
One that gets too close to 5E? No

AFAIK that mechanic is not copyrighted so I think you can, I've seen several games published that used that mechanic way before 5Ed.

Just remember to not copy any text direct from a copyrighted source.

Also, this belong to GD

Just curious, which games have you seen the advantage/disadvantage mechanic in before 5e?

Advantages and disadvantages were part of the HERO system (Champions etc.) as well as Villains & Vigilantes, and I think GURPS has something like that also.

On another subject... this thread does not contain actual game materials, but is a discussion thread, so I must boot it to General Discussion. Please remember, all posts in the Workshop must include actual game materials or a link to such which can be downloaded for free from another site.

One was Goblins & Grutas, a spanish rpg, it was presented as an option way before 5e started with its playtest.
I can't remember the names of the others. I know there is an spanish system that uses 3d10 for a roll, and you use the middle value, depending on some advantages and disadvantages you have to use either the higher or lower value.

There is no way to protect the mechanic of "roll two dice and pick the highest/lowest". If you want to be super-safe, call it something other than advantage/disadvantage (a thesaurus is a wonderful thing for clone writers). ;)

I use Advantage and Disadvantage in my games as a house rule. In fact, I pull stuff from several different versions of a certain game. Is a supplement necessary? Probably not, but it would still be cool. Call it something different if you need to, but go for it!
