In this day of needing a $50 buy-in just for players and a further $100 for a GM just to have the minimum books necessary to start a game, I had a good time putting together a BFRPG bundle on Amazon.

$25 5 x Basic Fantasy Role-Playing Game 3rd Edition Rulebooks
$3.80 The Basic Fantasy Field Guide
$3.86 BF1 Morgansfort:The Western Lands Campaign
$3.80 BF2 Fortress Tomb and Tower: The Glain Campaign
$3.75 JN1 The Chaotic Caves
$3.75 JN2 Monkey Isle
$4.90 JN3 Saga of the Giants
$3.75 AA1 Adventure Anthology 1
$3.65 DC1 Tales From the Laughing Dragon
$5.00 The Role-Playing Game Primer and Old School Playbook by Mr. Gonnerman
$12.99 35 Dice in 5 Complete Sets (5 sets of 7 polyhedral dice w/ 5 dice bags)
TOTAL $74.25 and Free Shipping (with Prime)

That is everything a person who has never played an RPG would need to get a whole campaign going for four players with minimal effort, down to the dice and a well-written primer to get started (pencil and paper still required).

It amazes me that for half the cost of a GM buy-in for 5th edition, one could have all they need for a couple of campaigns to keep 5 people busy for months playing a weekly game. All in a system that allows the players and their role in the story to shine brighter than being bogged down in the mire of hundreds of esoteric rules.

Of course, printing your own is even cheaper! Thanks, Chris and the BFRPG team. Oh, and even though I had printed my own rules a few years ago, since I was putting all of that in my Amazon cart, I went ahead and bought it all. I'm going to run a family campaign on Sundays and thought it would be great if my friends who play in my Saturday C&C campaign saw all the BFRPG books and asked about it, because I'd rather run BFRPG anyway.

This was actually what originally got me into basic fantasy rpg. I was looking into labyrinth lord, swords and wizardry, castles and crusades and a few others. I figured they were 99% the same game, so I bought the cheapest one (I know most of them are free, but I like having books).

Now that I've played all of the above games, I have come to prefer these rules as a base.
I like how it recreates the feel of certain old-school games, but makes mechanical innovations that streamline play rather than trying to be a copy.

I have to agree 101%.

Read glowing reviews online, searched for the game in Amazon, and immediately bought three books. I mean, seriously, the basic guide for $5? Insanity. So I got that, the Field Guide, and AA1 to get my feet wet. Around what, $14? Yes, insanity.

I've gone through the main book and I'm even more impressed now. So simple, so effective. And the book feels good in the hand and is very nicely designed and set. This does not feel like an amateur effort at all! These books and rules are of the same quality as any other books you can get for other RPGs.

I'm looking forward to spin up some characters and play a quick adventure! Thank you all for your amazing work on this game.

You got yourselves another fan. :geek:

It is official, my son just declared that BFRPG is our official rule set. We have played the Moldvay set, Swords & Wizardry, and LL and BFRPG. He said today that these are the rules that he wants to use. I agree 100%.
