I use rest rules as written, as i feel it gives the party a reason to head to a safe place.

While not my personal rules, my GM from a few years back had his rules as something like this:
I) While in the dungeon or in an area where danger lurks much more readily, characters regain only 1 HP/day.
II) In a safe location but not in a bed at an inn (or similar) the characters regain 1+Con mod HP/day.
III) In a safe location with a bed at an inn (or similar) the characters regain 1+Con mod+level HP/day.
Thing is the party had two clerics, one of which loaded up on healing and other party benefit spells so we never had to rest more than two days or so at most.
