Call to Convert BFRPG Modules to BrowserQuests!™

Post by Senyors »

Back in 2014, I began working on an online, single-player, persistent world RPG framework called BrowserQuests™ (https://browserquests.com) that's partially based on the Basic Fantasy RPG ruleset. Players can freely access the site, create a new hero, form an adventuring party and interact with a virtual gamemaster through text, graphics, music, browser-based controls and, most recently, text-to-speech audio. Three complete custom modules have already been developed and released within the system--roughly 4-6 hours of game play--and hundreds of players from all over the world now play the RPG on a daily basis.

In addition to allowing players to access the game, the BrowserQuests™ platform was also developed to allow content authors to build and release their own quests, modules and even entire campaigns as well; the system is still in development, but it's far enough along now to accept outside authors and begin work on a secondary campaign that players can enjoy as well. After speaking directly with Chris Gonnerman about all of this and earning his approval, I'd like to invite anyone interested in bringing the existing BFRPG modules to BrowserQuests™ and developing an entirely separate campaign around those modules.

While the BrowserQuests™ platform handles core RPG-based logistics (assigning heroes to a player, managing equipment, presenting encounters to the player, handling player feedback, etc.), the platform also introduces a significant literary element, such that the player experience reads almost like an interactive novel (to simulate a conversation between the player and the virtual GM). Hence, in order to bring existing BFRPG modules to the BrowserQuests™ platform, the content first needs to be scripted in such a way that a significant STORY is developed (not unlike the way that each chapter within the BFRPG core rulebook begins with a small story of heroes interacting with one another as well as their dungeon environment).

Accordingly, I'm looking for either players or GMs already familiar with the various BFRPG modules to begin work on a new campaign intended for BrowserQuests.™ Again, individual quests must first be scripted, then the overall module entered into the BrowserQuests™ online toolset for playtesting and eventual release (along with appropriate art-based assets). While building content for BrowserQuests™ is challenging (just as developing any quest, module or campaign for a group of traditional, table-top players is challenging), the BrowserQuests™ platform is global in scope so, ultimately, authored content should reach hundreds to thousands of players worldwide.

Interested? Get started by browsing the BrowserQuests™ Author's portal page at https://www.browserquests.com/Authors/Authors-Overview. Then, reach out to me (gamemaster@browserquests.com or my Discord channel at https://discord.gg/crcHcdC) and let me know your interest! Please note that, right now at least, all work would be performed on a strictly-volunteer basis--no financial compensation will be involved. I've been at it for seven years now myself and run/support the BrowserQuests™ platform at my own time and expense, so my hope is that I can recruit a small group of like-minded BFRPG enthusiasts who'd like to see the existing BFRPG modules developed into highly enjoyable stories and migrated to an online RPG platform where they can be enjoyed by players from all over the world!

This seems so intriguing and your game and site looks great. I'm going to try playing. I wish I had the time to get involved more. maybe in the future. Thank you for posting sharing here.

BrowserQuests Module #5 Now Available!

Post by Senyors »

The next module of our ongoing "Sorrow of Sisla" BrowserQuests™ campaign has arrived, and it's a nightmare before Christmas! Entitled "Lost Tears for Blu," the module focuses on the adventuring party heading northeast out of Nace and into the Cyan Desert after investigating some reports of marauding undead at a local bandit camp. For those who have already finished module #4 ("Dark Injustice"), just log in--the game will automatically advance the player's party to the first encounter of module #5.

Module #5 also features one of the quests from the Basic Fantasy RPG Adventure Anthology One. Loosely based on the "Deathcrypt of Khaldhun" quest by Scott A. Murray, the party learns of Khaldhun while visiting a wilderness bandit camp and must face a variety of new undead types before facing Khaldhun himself deep in his underground crypt.

Once again, the new module adds several hours of playtime to the default campaign, introducing new characters, monsters, locations, items and even a few new surprises (watch out for cursed items!). Along with all the time and effort spent developing the module, a wide diversity of engine enhancements and improvements have been made as well, including a new game mechanic by which some player options are now only provided under specific circumstances (such as whether the party is carrying enough of a particular item).

Based upon the core Basic Fantasy RPG rules and mechanics, BrowserQuests is a single-player, persistent-world online RPG that simulates the interaction between a gamemaster and a player to bring that classic, "old school" feeling to playing a computer-based RPG. All players are welcome to create an account and try the game for free at https://browserquests.com.
