thinking of a new campaign and would like some input

Post by cupofblackcoffee »

Just came from my flgs and bought a bone naga miniature and I started thinking about making a few dungeons connected to a cult of an ancient snake god & wanted some input from the community or at the very least to harvest some ideas from.

That does sound a lot like my campaign, unfortunately, it's all on loose paper in a binder.

Yeah, quite current.

In my setting the elder gods are therianthropomorphic or zoomorphic.
The milder ones are still worshipped by the wood elves and fairies.
The bloodthirsty ones have mostly disappeared and the main religion has anthropomorphic gods, similar to the standard Greek ones, including Chthonic ones who aren't worshipped in the open.
The high elves have their own convoluted pantheon.
The dwarves seem to be satisfied with only 3 gods.
Nobody's playing an halfling, so that hasn't come up yet.

that sounds like quite an extensive pantheon of gods. Are these gods active in the game world or just background lore ?

As it goes. Every settlement has some sort of Temple.
Where I live here, in a day, on foot, I could visit the place of worships of several dozens different religions. So that's an inspiration of sort. No actual creed or belief considered.

So it's mostly the various clerics who are active and I play them like politicians.
It all comes naturally, as it goes, as I only detail what the players uncover.

The elder gods because they have so few supporters are active with them.
And of course the serpent god is a bad influence.

The actual number you use doesn't really matter. I find odd number works best as everything as multiple oppositions, kinda like the 5 colors in Magic the Gathering.
