I am going to be running a game for my Wife and our 7 year old twins. One of my daughters wants to play a swashbuckler style character, one is playing a rogue and my wife is playing a standard heavy armor fighter.
any suggestions on how to make a fighter that uses Dexterity and lghter armor?
Swashbuckler/Duellist style class?
Re: Swashbuckler/Duellist style class?
Not named Swashbuckler, but the Gladiator class was built to achieve exactly that. The last sentence even gives the alternate name "Duelist). Take a look:

Is it really the end, not some crazy dream?

You can make a subclass (either fighter or thief) or a quasi-class.
Changing a fighter into a SB....
Remove heavy armor and shield access (allow bucklers only)
Reduce weapon access to light blades (daggers, short-swords, fencing swords...), plus whips
Add the ability to use those weapons with Dex instead of Str (and make Dex the ability requirement)
Add the Tumble and Climb skills.
I would add some kind of dueling bonus (usable only when fighting 1 vs 1) and maybe some extra special ability...
Alternative here are a couple of SB already made
Thief Subclass
Fighter Subclass

Re: Swashbuckler/Duellist style class?
Thank you for the quick replies. I like the "gladiator" class but I may give them a special combat action that gives their oponents a - modifier based on the Gladiator's charisma. This would be the character taunting their opponent.
Re: Swashbuckler/Duellist style class?
Maybe something like:
"On a successful hit, make a Charisma check (roll under attribute). If successful, you gain an extra +2 to your armor class or a +2 to your next attack roll."

Taunt: A Swashbuckler may attempt to taunt an opponent instead of attacking, if doing it the opponent must save vs. Spell. An opponent that is successfully taunted will focus his attacks on the Swashbuckler for 1d4* rounds and suffer the Swashbuckler's Charisma bonus as a penalty on initiative, attack and damage rolls*.
*Can be improved by XP if the GM wants it.
