Bards and experience
Bards and experience
I really like the bard writeup for BFRPG; it's very well written. However, I feel they would level up too quickly given their experience point requirements, at least for my tastes. I know the XP table matches that of OD&D, so I can see why the level progression is written up that way.
Would it unbalance the class if I had bards use the same XP table as thieves? Maybe I could add some of the thief skills like they do in AD&D 2e.
Edit: Looking at the thief skills available to bards in 2e, I'd remove Pick Pockets and give them Move Silently instead.

Which one of all the Bards available on the forum are you referring to?

I was thinking of the writeup by R. Kevin Smoot. That's the version I know of.

Re: Bards and experience
You mean the Bardic Characters Supplement?
They have an xp requirement of 1750, higher than a Thief (1250) and a Cleric (1500).
If you mean the QC (also by Smoot), with 1000xp, they won't earn levels faster than a thief due to how QC work.

Probably the latter, but I'm unfamiliar with QC. What does that mean?

Re: Bards and experience
Quasi Classes, there is also the Bard Supplement made by Solo and Smoot, working similarly to a Quasi Class, but allowing for single class Bards, but Solo mentioned that single class just suck, so my recommendations:
Use the Bardic Characters Supplement
Use the Bard Supplement but w/out the Single Class Option
Use the Bard from Quasi Classes Supplement
Use the Bardic Characters Supplement
Use the Bard Supplement but w/out the Single Class Option
Use the Bard from Quasi Classes Supplement

Re: Bards and experience
Okay thanks. I do have the Quasi Classes supplement. I also have one supplement that has the bard as its own class but allows humans to combine it with other classes. It has the same experience as the bard quasi-class. It's listed as Revision 2, so maybe the one with 1750 xp is a later one.
I am talking about the one in the original post here: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=2339

Yes, that the one by Solo and Smoot, the one Solomoriah commented on single class bards not being really useful.

Thanks for letting me know about the Bardic Characters document. I just downloaded it and will take a closer look. And thanks for answering my questions.
