3) Undermountain: Life and Death

Post by Jandolar »

With the COS cut down to 3 members from the original 6 (having lost a faithless cleric, a stalwart dwarven warrior and a human thief) the remaining members take some time at the Yawning Portal to have a few drinks, a hearty meal and discuss what the next step is. Durnan as usual is never far from the group and he occasionally wanders over and offers a drink on the house or some encouraging words.

Meanwhile across town a young cleric under the tutelage of Balmorea is eating his evening meal. In walks the high priest Giovanni I have something I want you to do for the church. Taking a seat across the table and helping himself to a cup of wine the healer continues There is a group of adventurers here in town that we've had dealings with on a couple of occasions. Yes the same ones that recently ended the ramblings of the Ghost Knight although it cost them greatly.. The big man looks thoughtfully into his cup for a few seconds as if divining higher purpose from the amber liquid. Simply put we need you to find out if they are going back into the dungeons and if they are you must petition them to go along. We feel that your clerical abilities have gone as far as they can in the safety of the church. You've come a long way and I'd like to see you go much farther. Go adventuring. Gain some knowledge of the world outside these walls. Make a fortune and make some friends along the way. Then return to us if you feel it is your calling to be a leader in the church. If you feel compelled to do something else then at least stop in once in a while and let us know how you fare. With that he drains his cup and leaves Giovanni to think on his words.

Walking into the Yawning Portal, the Gnomish Magic User Quistine Foechuckle glances around looking for her intended contacts. She's recently heard that a rather successful adventuring group has lost several members in a magical battle. Well since she's got a few skills tucked neatly into her repertoire, and the Carnage of Steel happens to have a few openings, she figures it's time to see if she can join up. Making a pile of money simply picking locks and casting spells is going to be one great way to go back home a rich Gnome. Ah, there they are sitting around a table drinking and looking rather forlorn.

In the days since the fireball incident Hermia has scarce left her booth in the common room of the Portal, having thrown herself headlong into eating her grief in the form of any dessert they can offer. The first hints of that old halfling stoutness have already made an incursion upon her normally petite frame.

I feel lika you guysa are trying to get rid of me. Was it the comment about you drinking all the communion wine? I wasa only joking!

A stern look from the high priest sends Giovanni off to his room to gather his traveling gear. He's always hated the armor but its hardly noticeable over his cloak. Before leaving he grabs his hat and the shield he's been using as an ashtray. He steps outside the church, lighting a small cigar as he looks around.

The Yawning Portal huh? Soundsa lot like some of the nuns at the monastery..

It had taken Quistine several months to gather enough rumors on the Carnage of Steel to finally locate them within the city of Waterdeep. Another week and a few spells finally got her the name of the Yawning Portal, a well known Inn where the party was staying. Finally arriving at the tavern Quistine took a deep breath a stepped through the door.
Upon spying the group sitting at a nearby table the cloaked gnome makes her way to the bar and asks "Excuse me, that group over there, is that not the Carnage of Steel?" She then slips a bag of gold over the counter and says "If it is I want to buy them all a round." She smiles, today might just be her lucky day.

In his despair, Oypeen had decide to drink the most expensive elven wine in the tavern. Not wishing to deplete their hard won earnings much more he had been sipping it quite slowly. Which meant he was quite surprised when a second goblet appeared on his table.

Giovanni makes his way to the Yawning Portal.. He remembers it as the place where all the crazy adventurers hang out. He is already regretting listening to the monsignour. He opens the door, spots the bartender and makes his way over..

Ima looking for somebody or something thata goes by the name ofa Carnage of Steel? The Church of Balmorea sent me...

Having spent the last several days exchanging spells, getting equipped and getting to know the two newest members our group is once again preparing to delve into the deep. As they prepare themselves a dwarf warrior approaches and says he's looking for Sturm. He's been out of town for a while and thought to buy his friend an ale or two. Upon hearing of Sturms death his forehead creases a bit and he says Well I'll tell you like I'd tell him. Don't take alcohol from a slumbering brother. With that cryptic message he heads to Durnan and loudly orders a round for the house and two tankards of dark ale. One tankard he drinks out of while the other is placed to his right at an empty chair.

With all members on the lowering platform Durnan walks over and after taking a gold piece from each for passage he mentions that a few days ago seven members of The Black Banner dropped into Undermountain and haven't been heard of since. Upon reaching the bottom the CoS sees ample evidence that a group has been by here recently. Proceeding with caution they retrace their steps until they are standing next to the secret door that Opyeen noticed on the way out last time.

(I'll have to update the map when I get home.)

Quistine keeps an ear out for any strange noises while looking around in all directions surveying the environment. "Not much to look at but I can see how somebody could get lost in a place like this."

((Quistine will be keeping an eye out for anything unusual while moving around. She will stay near the front of the party, but behind the first rank))

Oypeen taps Quistene on the shoulder and says "There is a secret door right there. Hold up while we get our specialist to come up here and check it out."

He will then sit back and see if this new guy is any good at sneaking around and opening secret doors.
