4) Undermountain: The Beholders Key

Post by Jandolar »

The following morning Carnage of Steel awakens with a more charitable agenda than they usually have. Last night a young boy was caught trying to pick the lock to their rooms and after a short discussion it was revealed that he, and perhaps several of his friends, had been compiling information on the Band of The Hand a local secretive group that is diligently searching for the Beholders Key that currently resides in Rykkens pack.

Unbeknownst to the CoS a previous band of adventurers have also been traveling the dark below in search of the key. This other group, Band of The Black Banner, has unfortunately been in Undermountain for some time and are presumed dead or so loaded down with treasure that they are having a hard time carrying it all back up to the surface. There is much gossip about them in the Yawning Portal.

Another young adventurer waits in the common area of the inn hoping to join a group headed into the catacombs. The Adept Ravoneth is not searching for riches or fame but for a lost member of her refuge. Brother James came into Waterdeep months ago on a supply run for the Refuge and quickly fell in with a group of fortune seekers making forays into Undermountain. He hasn't been heard from since and Ravoneth is instructed to find him and help him reaffirm his vows or bring him back home for questioning or burial depending on how the encounter goes.

The next phase of Undermountain begins....

While gathering their gear together before heading down for breakfast there is a knock on the door. Opening it the CoS sees one of the servers with a note in her hand. Passing it over she turns and heads back to her duties.

The note reads.
I'll need to speak to you when you come down for breakfast this morning. There is a young Adept down here that I think would like to join you on your next run into Undermountain assuming you plan to go down again. She is looking for a brother of hers that has gone missing and I remember seeing him head down below some time back. A table is already set up for you near the bar, eggs and bacon are cooking so bring your appetite.

Respectfully.
Durnan.

Ravoneth is stirred from her meditation as the CoS comes down the stairs. Nothing physical woke her from her trance although something surely thought she needed to see this group before they saw her.

Watching them she sees an elf wearing the robes of a magic user as well as the weapons of a warrior. His clothes are worn out a bit but appear to be well cared for. He has the walk and stance of a nobleman and looks as if he'd be at ease in either a fine dining hall or a darkened dungeon. Why one so handsome and of obvious noble birth is here is an enigma.

Next is a pair of Halflings. Both rather giddy and bubbly with enthusiasm one is easily recognized as a fighter with her mail and sword and a bow held easily in one hand. This one has the look of someone who has faced death and prevailed with a smile, and also one who has seen death take those close to her. The other is dressed in tight fitting leather with pockets sewn here and there. Probably a thief or a skulker with all those pockets holding pick and lock breakers. Strangely enough both of them carry map cases and there are ink stains upon their hands. Fighting scholars perhaps?

Near the middle of the group walks a tall human in full plate mail with a shield slung over his back and a heavy mace close at hand. A holy symbol of some sort adorns the armor and his easy going demeanor speaks of a holy man confident in his role on life.

Near to the holy man walks a gnome female in the leathers of a thief. She has the soft tread of her kind with smooth movements of one practiced in the art of stealth. Contrary to the norm of a thief she also has various small pouches attached to her belt similar to those that a magic user would use to contain the material components for spells.

At the back of the group comes a human. He makes a quick note in a book he has and then stores it in his pack taking care to place it securely. His scroll case and lack of armor shows that he is a true practitioner of the Magical Arts. He has a shrewd look about him as if he calculates all things in terms of gain and loss.

As the group settles in at a table set for them Durnan the tavern owner comes out from the kitchens and leans in to speak to them. Before doing so he glances at Ravoneth and subtly points to the group with a smile and also indicates that she wait until called upon to approach.

Hermia and Mae wave in the general direction Durnan points before returning to their eggs.

Oypeen looks closely at the adept in the corner once Durnam points her out. Seems fit, with eyes that don't seem to miss much, but there's something in the eyes, or perhaps the stance that says well trained, but not well tested in the heat. Still, Durnam has not steered them wrong yet. If he likes this one, then he won't object to her joining them if the others are in favor.

ravoneth nods briefly to Durcan and keeping a partial mind on Durcan and the party, resumes meditating on the enigma of Brother James.

After a brief discussion it is decided to allow the Adept to have a seat a the table. Once seated introductions are made around the table.

(Edit: Please feel free to post up actual introductions. It'd be nice to see how you describe yourselves to a newcomer.)

(FYI all this is the last time for a while that Quistine will be with you in your adventures. After this meeting she is going to settle in with Ol Prydwyn and start digging into the research side of the Beholders Key. I'll also be running Giovanni, hope I can get his accent right, until Dymond gets back.)

Halflings sometimes have a reputation amongst the bigger folk for resembling children, but between the bobbed hair of one and the way neither can quite seem to sit still, it seems all the more true. The older-looking one has her dark hair pulled into a loose bun, and a few strands pop out of place as she jumps to catch in her mouth the broken up piece of bacon the younger-looking one tosses to her. You get the sense that the two must have known each other for years (but, were you to ask, you'd find out they only recently met.) As Ravoneth approaches they break to wave again, the younger one maintains her cheery youthfulness while the older one straightens up, adopting a prim, professional attitude.

Rykken examines the newcomer in the corner quickly but he is distracted by thoughts of the young lad from last night. He wonders what exactly they have gotten themselves mixed up in and why so many people are looking for this key.

As the young lady approaches the table, Rykken stands and bows. "Greetings, miss. Rykken Steelchanter at your service. We look forward to having you join our group."
The problem with doing something really stupid to impress people is that they may just be impressed by how stupid you really are.

She bows to the party and then takes a seat near the young halfling. "Greetings, champions. I am Pilgrim Ravoneth of the Quaynar Refuge. I have travelled to Waterdeep in search of another pilgrim, Brother James. He was last seen with the Band of the Black Banner, also headed into the Undermountain. Innkeeper Durcan suggested that your group would be most likely to aid me in my quest, and I with yours." She comes across almost as detached as a full blooded elf, but a bit less haughty.
