[IF] Handbook of Monsters

This subforum is for discussion of the Iron Falcon Rules for Classic Fantasy Role-Playing. Maybe someday they'll have their own forum, but for now I'm keeping the discussion here.

In your Workshop thread; generally, in the first post. You can always edit your first post to update the releases.

TOME OF TPK!!!!

And it's great, Chris. Saw a few monsters that are not in the BF book that would be easy to convert.

There are a few IF monsters that are not in BFRPG; you are welcome to convert them and repost them, just include the IF copyright statements per the usual procedure.

Just saw the monster guidebook and gave it a quick scan -- I really like it.

I saw the question of art came up. For me, it's not essential. As long as the layout is clear and clean (as it currently is), I'm a happy camper and nothing else matters for me.

Just uploaded R6. This version includes revisions to the dungeon wandering monster tables. I'll be doing the same thing to the wilderness and city encounters, and then the book will be feature-complete. If anyone is willing to look the dungeon tables over and let me know if there are any issues, I'd be most appreciative!

  1. hit points, hit dice, etc.: need to standardize whether to capitalize or not
  2. Page 2: "IIron Falcon Handbook of Monsters"
  3. Bear, Grizzly: "1,8000 coins"
  4. Cave Locus, Giant; 4th paragraph: "1d2 damage" should be "points of"
  5. Dinosaur, Triceratops: "20,0000 coins"
  6. Golem, Clay: "6000 coins" missing comma
  7. Lizard Man: change to "weighs between 2,000 and 2,500 coins"?
  8. Rhinoceros: "6,0000 coins"
  9. Rock Baboon: "2500 coins" missing comma
  10. Rot Grub: "etc" needs period
  11. Slug, Giant and Snake, Giant Rattlesnake (applies to all entries): need to standardize on either "feet" or "'"
  12. Spider, Giant Tarantula; 2nd paragraph: correct to "... dances; he or she..."
  13. Dungeon Encounters, Level 6: "Deceiver" mis-spelled
  14. City Encounters; paragraph after the table: Monster names are capitalized, when normally oustide of stat-blocks and tables they aren't (unless beginning of a sentence obviously)

Neither should be capitalized in running text, but they are in headings/titles (such as in stat blocks). Not sure if I want to capitalize or not in the "data" (right) side of the stat block, but for now I'm going with lower case.

Fixed. That last one is wrong in the BFRPG core rules, evidently.

I prefer the word, for the sake of clarity. Do need to verify whether feet or scale inches are needed (if discussing the size of a monster, feet, obviously; but game statistics should always be in scale inches).

Ack. That last was wrong in the running text of the monster description in one place also. Fixed.

Good point. Fixed.

I've applied these fixes to my R7, which I will post when I get the encounter tables recalculated.

Oops... one thing you wanted to change is actually right in the text, in my opinion. The sentence in the Giant Tarantula reads:
Each round the original victim dances, he or she must save vs. Poison again or take 1d4 points of damage.
I believe this is correct. I could insert "that" before "the original", but in my understanding of the language, "that" is not strictly needed in this usage.

ALSO, the R6 PDF has some flow issues that I'll try to correct for R7. GAH.

Just uploaded R7 to the first post. It includes the changes Chi and I just discussed above, and has updated wilderness and city encounter tables, and as far as I know all boxes are filled in for all monsters. Hoping this will be the "final" no-art release.
