ULFGAR the FIGHTER (Dead)

Post by Longman »

Ulfgar is a member of a tribal confederation which was invaded by The Empire, and he was captured as a slave and brought to the Capital.

He knows his tribal language and a smattering of Empire (Common).

After he has been working as a slave for several years, he does something to annoy his master. He has no idea what it is. He got sold to the gladiatorial arena of the mighty Arko.
He has heard of the place, but really has no idea what is in store for him.

After he has been locked in a holding cell for a few days, some ogre guards open the door and give him a short-sword and a short-spear and shunt him out into an underground arena where his first opponent is waiting.

It's another human gladiator, with exactly the same weapons.

Post your character and I will post the area and we can begin.

ULFGAR the FIGHTER vs Measly Mago

Here's the map. It's the same arena as for Barguk's first fight. You will have to download it.

The situation is pretty similar to his. You get shunted out the southern entrance by an ogre with a whip. You begin at K02.

The arena is underground and carved out of sandstone with magical lights all over the ceiling (40 up). The black areas are pillars left to support the roof. The grey lines are the arena walls, which are are 15' high. Behind them are tiered galleries. About 30 people have come to watch your first fight, a sideshow against another newbie opponent. It's quite smoky in here - all the gnomes with pipes, probably.

He appears at S11, also goaded on by an ogre so he doesn't run away. He has the exact same weapons as you.

He rolls a 1 for initiative. He looks like he is going to move towards the central pillar and maybe go to the north of it. He looks scared.

Roll for initiative! And then declare your actions. Tell me which square you move to, etc.

Disoriented by the light and wide open space after being confined in a dim cell for so long, Ulfgar stumbles into the arena.
It takes him a moment to figure out that he is supposed to fight the other poor sod (initiative 0).
He then utters a wolfish howl - not as convincing as the true berserkers of his clan, but trying his best - and closes with his opponent.
Ulfgar readies his spear for throwing with his right hand and carries the sword in his left.

[OOC: two questions regarding movement:

(1) do I have to guess where my opponent will be and declare a square to move to, even if I lost initiative and move second?
(2) how do we handle diagonals?]

1 - You never have to guess. Movement does not happen simultaneously. If it's your initiative, you move as many squares as you want, up to your maximum - or twice your maximum if running or charging. That happens before your opponent moves at all. If you want to delay your action to see what your opponent does, you can do that. The loser of the initiative contest must act on their initiative number.
2 - You can move diagonals, with no limit.

Rather surprised at winning the initiative with a 1, Longman's NPC fighter runs hastily towards the central pillar and hides behind it - in square J13. There are some boos from the audience.

You can't get to him in a round of normal movement, or a charge. Now what? (It's your move.)

Ulfgar will run howling to M10.
If he can see his opponent from there, he throws his spear.

I am giving you a penalty of -2 because your opponent has partial cover. Nonetheless, you can throw your spear from M10 at him. Your total roll will therefore be at -2.

His AC is 10. If you roll a 12 or more, you hit him for a d6 damage with the spear.

Do you want to roll for that? I can roll your dice for you if you like, but I had envisage you would do so.

With a grunt, Ulfgar launches the spear at his opponent but the throw goes wide (rolled a 7).

"Stop running away! It is better to die like a man than to live on as a slave!"

For the next turn, Ulfgar will switch his sword to his right hand and engage in melee if he can reach the other gladiator (initiative 1).

The other gladiator, Mago, narrowly beats you for initiative. He throws his own spear at you. You do not have cover.

He rolls a total of 14, hitting you. You take 2 hit points and are on exactly zero.

Please save vs Death Ray, with no penalties on the roll.

Ulfgar's eyes grow wide with surprise as the spear strikes him squarely in the chest.
He collapses and is already dead when he strikes the floor (rolled a 5).
In death, his face is relaxed, almost serene, for he can now face his ancestors without shame.
