Brandon is a criminal from the province of Arkanea, noted for lawlessness. He was captured by Imperial soldiers and sentenced to be executed, but the gnomes of Arko's infamous arena bought him from the government for a tiny sum.

He is being forced to enter gladiatorial contests in order to win his freedom. He speaks Empire (common) and that's all. He doesn't even know Arkanean, and cant read or write.

OK Brandon,

You get shunted out the west door into the starting arena. It is here:

download/file.php?id=2032

You should download this file.

The arena is underground, carved of sandstone, with a sand floor, a ceiling about 40' high and walls about 15' high, before the galleries start behind the walls. It's well lit with magical lights in the ceiling. The black areas are pillars holding up the ceiling. There are about 30 odd gnomes dwarves and humans in the galleries, watching idly at your first fight. There is an ogre behind you with a whip and a goad, prodding you forward.

You don't actually have a halberd. You have a shortsword and a shield. You begin at B12.

You can't see your opponent yet. You don't know who or where s/he is.

Roll for initiative.

I roll a 6, if I go first, I'll move up to d18 and put my back to the pillar.

Unseen servant seems to be down.

Just so you know - if you are running, you can actually move 16 squares. Your intended move takes you only 6. But that's OK.

You can now see your opponent. It's another human with a net and a javelin (short spear). He moved down south and ends up in J05. He's in sight.

Roll for init again.

Initiative 5, if he goes after me I will hold my action until he has moved and then, if he is close enough for me to move and attack I will do that and if not I will put the pillar between him and me by moving to c19.

Your opponent rolls a 2. You delay.

He moves to F13 and throws his javelin. He is at medium range. He rolls a 7 and misses you. The javelin hits the wall you had your back against, and ends up bouncing into E19. It looks useable.

Because you delayed, it is now your action. You may move and attack, charge, get the javelin and throw it, or whatever you wish to do.

Brandon moves and attacks, rolling a 19 to hit and if that hits it does 5 damage. Brandon swings his shortsword at his opponent.

That's a hit all right! His miss with the javelin was costly. You knock him unconscious. He critically fails his save vs death, and dies on the floor in front on you.

You win. You get 500 exp and a reputation point. I will explain how to use that later.

Moving you on to your next fight soon. Roll for init, if you like.
