My House Rules Sheet

Post by bscalise »

I put a front/back letter-sized sheet together that contains pretty much all my house rules. It's a more personal document where I'm breaking the fourth wall and speaking directly to my players, so don't expect the standard writing style. I print these out and slip them in my players' print books.

This may or may not be useful outside my table, but feel free to use or discuss these ideas. Some of them will be familiar to you, but several of them are my own rules. If you use any of them, I'd like to hear your thoughts.

If anyone sees the need to form some of these ideas into a BF-style supplement, go for it.

Versions:
First forum release is R3.
Whoops, I meant to post R5 as the first post. R3 is very old, dangit.
Updated to R6. Added Tracking and Poison rules, Proficiencies, and some minor things.

Added my matching GM Screen that uses these rules. It's meant to be printed on 11x17, then cut out to slide into the Stratagem screen (https://www.amazon.com/Stratagem-Master ... r=8-2&th=1). A Word file will be in the comments, since file maximum is 3.

I like that the document is concise.
I use a roll-for-casting-spells mechanic too and it's my absolute favorite house rule. Although I would advise to be creative with the mishaps. D6 damage is a good default, though.
Ability tests are a much needed mechanic, in my opinion, and your rules make it scaleable for GMs, which is a big plus. However, I would probably just go with Ability Checks from Core Rules or make this system compatible with thief skill rolls somehow. It's just too many different task resolving mechanics for my taste: d20 roll high for attacks, d100 roll low for thieves, d(various) for task resolutions. It just might sound confusing for new players.
And lastly, I use more XP, Attack then Move, critical hits and misses and defensive stance too. So I can say that they do work well.

Well that was dumb of me. When I made this post, I uploaded my Release 3 files... but those are very old and my newest file is actually R5. Whoops. Check it again, please.

Hey, thanks. Check it again though. I had accidently posted an incomplete version from over a year ago. You might find the R5 more interesting.

Thanks for posting this. It had some nice food for thought in it. Always neat to see how others approach rolling for casting. I still haven't landed on a particular version of it yet.

Thanks. The "Casting Additional Spells" rule does a couple of things. Makes INT and WIS actually mean something for spellcasters. If you have a +2 in your casting ability score, you basically have a 50% chance to successfully cast beyond your normal limit. If you had an 18/+3, it's 67%.

If you have enough HP, and it's worth the risk, you can just keep trying to cast more each round. Losing HP simulates the energy it takes for a caster to actually force spells out, and actually gives perimeter casters some damage to think about, while others are taking melee damage.
