IF-Iron Solo or Solo Falcon

This subforum is for discussion of the Iron Falcon Rules for Classic Fantasy Role-Playing. Maybe someday they'll have their own forum, but for now I'm keeping the discussion here.

IF-Iron Solo or Solo Falcon

Post by PatB »

I did a solo dungeon crawling test again with three first-level characters (using IR'75 Optional Rules) and I'm amazed at the result. I don't know if it's due to chance of the dice or luck, but all three managed to get away with it. I play thoughtfully and tactically of course, and maybe that makes the difference. You can never predict what other players might do in a "normal" game. In fact, I realize that several gaming sessions over the past 35 years have ended in TPK because of a single player. Always the same.

Are there people among you who practice solo?

I often play solo to test out mechanics and adventure design. Actually wish I had more time for it as well.

I'm realizing I'm about 6-7 months late to this party, but I too have taken a fancy to using IF for my solo go-to ruleset. I just created a party of 8 characters and went through an adventure from the IF Adventures Vol 1. The MU died, of course.

I'm not a big fan of the GME's and have found a different free product to be my de facto GM for now but am always on the lookout for what other gamers are doing with their solo play. I'm excited about using IF. I'm a fan of BF, but I'm putting together a lot of material from the basic version of the original game to help me in solo play and appreciated the earlier feel of IF for my solo play.

I'm sorry you didn't get more interest in this thread when you originally posted. Sometimes a good idea takes a little time to catch on. Do you have any thoughts or ideas to share since you began using IF for your solo adventures?

I would like to share some content/items that I hope might be useful for all (especially those who may enjoy playing IF or BF solo along with various content provided for free from this site's downloads section.

First, I alluded to an article in another thread written by GG himself back in the Spring of '75 that guided folks through solo dungeon creation and an envelope exchange system for creating new/unusual dungeon rooms to prevent dungeons from becoming stale. I came across this link in a blog post here: https://solodungeoncrawler.blogspot.com ... olo-1.html

I think very highly of this English gentleman. I thoroughly enjoy reading his blog on how to play D&D solo. I use his system to play IF solo. You could easily use it to play BF solo, too. He also has a YouTube channel that reiterates his blog here: https://www.youtube.com/@SoloDungeonCrawler

GG's maiden issue of The Strategic Review from the Spring of '75 that showcases this solo dungeon generation system can be found here: https://annarchive.com/files/Strv101.pdf and here https://solodungeoncrawler.blogspot.com ... olo-1.html

If you look at the comments/explanation of this YouTube video by Solo Dungeon Crawler, you can see everything he pulls together for his own solo gaming experience (including several very useful PDFs he has made to support his solo play). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-Fe7wtiJKk

I also think these excellent and generous PDFs can be located at the bottom of this blog in the resources section: https://solodungeoncrawler.blogspot.com ... -part.html

I think very highly of this English gentleman, find him to be very open to comments and suggestions, and he's eager to develop his content for solo play and all things old-school to the best of his ability. If you decide to follow him on his blog or YouTube channel, I hope you find his content to be as useful as I have.

Cheers!
