Room 3 - The Gauntlet

**Boxed Text**
The room is cloaked in an impenetrable darkness, there is no noise from within.
*End Boxed Text**

Four Minotaur guard this room relying on their keen hearing and sense of smell to detect intruders.

4 Minotaur: AC 14 (12) HD 6, #At 1 gore/1 bite or 1 weapon, Dam 1d6/1d6 or 1d8+2 (Battle axe), Mv 30' Unarmored 40', Sv F6, Ml 11, XP 500
HP

29 ☐☐☐☐☐ ☐☐☐☐☐ ☐☐☐☐☐ ☐☐☐☐☐ ☐☐☐☐☐ ☐☐☐☐

The Minotaurs will make no attempt to raise the alarm. Their group has tasked them to defend this room. They do carry the keys to the barred gate so it might be possible to trick, charm or otherwise gain them to enable access.

Room 3a - Gentle landings

**Boxed Text**
The descent downwards from the level above takes a short while, the drifting sensation is an unusual one. The landing is both quiet and soft. The exit from the small chamber you are now in is closed off by a barred wall and gate. Beyond the bars all is dark.
**End Boxed Text **

The gate is locked in three places, each requiring a separate pick locks roll. The door can be forced, but any open doors roll carries a - 1 penalty.

That which does not kill you is likely to still hurt alot, so best avoid it if possible.

Room 1 - The Ambushed Dwarves

***Boxed Text***
Once you manage to open the doors, you find yourself in a fairly small room at the center of which is a large corroded red sandstone statue stands. Although it is severely corroded, you can still discern its shape. It appears to have the body of a human warrior wearing primitive gear but with the head of a lizard. It is mounted on a large circular base, just as corroded as the rest of the statue. More surprisingly, you find a crew of four dwarves sitting and laying on the floor, resting after enduring an hard fought battle. They seem to be wounded and stand up and grab their weapons as soon as you enter the room.
***End Boxed Text***

The four dwarves were ambushed not too long ago by the trolls that dwell in this level of the dungeon (see area 19) and retreated to this room to rest a bit before going back up to level 3. They are members of the Silver Anvil League (see area 3.26) and were sent below to explore and map the dungeon. Although they will be reluctant to disclose this information the true reason of their presence on this level is their search for the Moon Piece, a powerful ancient artifact their clan is in quest of. These dwarven warriors are currently healing and resting and are not looking for a fight and will leave for their lair one the third level 3d6 hours after being first encountered by the players.

Dwarven Warrior: AC 15 (16), HD 3, #At 1 Handaxe/warhammer or shortbow (+2 AB), Dam 1d6, Mv 30', Sv F3, Ml 9 (10), XP 145 ea.

All dwarven warriors have darkvision 60 feet and have a +4 bonus on Death Ray or Poison, Magic Wands, Paralysis or Petrify, and Spells and +3 VS Dragon Breath. In mêlée, they will fight with either a war hammer or a handaxe. They all carry a shied and wear chain mail. In range, they all use light crossbows. Individually, they each carry treasure types Q and R.

There is something odd about the statue, as if it was build outside the dungeon and purposely brought into the depths of this place many years later. The displacement process appears to have damaged the statue, though most of the erosion was caused by the elements as if it was left outside for a centuries. At first glance, there is nothing special about the statue tough if is spoken to in the language of the lizard-folks, it will start shining a soft yellow light. This is because it contains the soul of Rotzukh, an ancient powerful warrior-mage that once led an army of lizard-folk known as The Scourge of the Gods. Once the soul of Rotzuks is activated by shining yellow, they will be able to ask questions to which the statue can only answer by yes or no by shining either blue (for yes) or red (for no). Rotzukh is quite secretive and meditative and will reluctantly share his story with the adventurers. Moreover, he is still very proud and will stop any contact (by stopping shining) if he ever feels vexed of humiliated. Note that the main focus of the statue will be to convince the players to break or damage the statue enough to release Rotzukh's soul from it.

Destroying or severing a part of the statue of Rotzukh will free its soul and release a poisonous gas that will fill the room (save VS Poison or Die). Moreover, the freed soul of Rotzukh will attempt to posses whoever has the highest strength score in a 100 ft radius (save VS Spells to avoid). If the dwarves are still around and no one has a strength score of 13 or higher, Rotzukh will try to possess one of the dwarves before possessing any of the players. Rotzukh has only one attempt at finding a new host for his soul and should he miss the opportunity, his soul will be lost forever.

If a player becomes possessed by Rotzukh, he or she instantly turns into an incredibly evil version of itself. The DM should inform the player that his main motivation is now to assemble an army and conquer the world and to restore the former glory of the Scourge of the Gods. Going forward, the player will want to be addressed to as Rotzukh at all times and will start plotting to assemble a war-band right away. The possessed player gains the ability to speak the language of the lizard-folk but retains his abilities and doesn't get any new abilities other than incredible fierceness and cruelty. If the possessed player is ever killed, Rotzukh's soul will attempt to possess another living being though it still has one shot at it. Casting the spell Remove Curse has a 50% chance of freeing the host from Rotuzkh, though each further attempt decreases the chance of success by 10% (i.e. the second attempt has 40% chance, the third has 30%, and so on). If released this way, the soul can attempt to posses a new host in a 100 ft. radius.
