New class: Dragon Priest

Post by Lord Gilbard »

Hello there everyone, I am relatively new to this site but I have many good ideas, where I thought id start is with an idea that I have had for a while now.
So My idea is for a new class, A Dragon priest!
now before everyone starts with the "aww that is going to be far to over powered" I was going to ensure that I make it balanced and equal with all of the other classes.

So to begin , what I was thinking as a guide line to begin with is a sort of druid that can "specialise" with dragon related lore. They get a choice of spell that the player my choose 1 of at level1, these could include things like dragon appeasement ( a spell that is a miniature ritual that can be performed whilst adventuring), and a basic understanding of Dragonic culture. As they progress up the levels, the will slowly gain more spells and ritual powers ( like sacrifices).

One of the main things that the dragon priest must do is choose a type of dragons to specialise in be that red, green, blue etc. and then progressively ( with levels) develop a stronger relationship with that type of dragon, for example
lvl 1- no different to a say a fighter
lvl 3- can hold a conversation with a dragon
lvl 5- can hold a conversation with any type of dragon
lvl 9- certainty of not getting killed by chosen dragon type
lvl 11- can summon 1 of chosen type (not for fighting purposes)
lvl 15- if a set amount for each type of dragon is rolled, the player can persuade a dragon to assist the player in a minor way such as carrying a small number of items a certain distance for a small fee
lvl 17- can befriend chosen type of dragon and can have minor authority over all types of dragon, allowing things like asking dragons where locations may be can be acheived but still no certainty of survival/
lvl 19 - is a dragon is befriended, it can be ridden to a location that distance is set by the amount rolled
lvl20 - has mojor authority over chosen type allowing almost anything to be asked of a dragon of this type but nothing that could potentially major injure it or kill it and questionable authority over all dragons almost removing the thereat of being killed for all dragon encounters except the chromatic dragons where there is still a small-ish chance of a battle.
Or something like that, I will of course modify the abilities a lot before final release depending on what you guys say. Now I know that all does sound slightly over powered so I knew I would have to make quite a few cuts in places.
one of the things I was considering is for every ability you gain, you loose reputation in various places you visit unless you have become somewhat of a local legend. Another thing could perhaps be that dragon priests are not proficient in any weapons and have to take 1/4 of the damage dealt by a weapon away.

I must stress that this is still a very early project so any ideas that you guys may have will be deeply considered and more than likely added into the final product. I will of course keep posting as I develop ideas ( I already have many that I will voice soon enough) so watch this space

I hope you like the idea and I look forward to any posts I receive :)
Kind regards Lord Gilbard

Im glad to hear it :)

One of the things i was planning to make is... when fighters get to build a home they can build a stronghold , wizards can build a wizards tower , clerics can build a temple etc. I was thinking something along the lines of a Barrow Shrine. An underground building that is mainly centred around dragon appeasement. It would be largely up to the player how They wanted to design it but i must be based around dragon lore and have at least 1 large shrine.

OK then I have a question for you, and i realize that role-play has many values especially in a role-play game, but what if any combat value does this class have?
Can it use spells?
What is its Exp advancement?
what are its saves?
and in what ways are its skills viable for the casual everyday life of adventuring?

And also what happens when this completely un-weapon proficient character meets say any of the other 90% of monsters in the land?

Yes they can use spell and i haven t thought about their Xp advancement as of yet and I am not decided on the un proficient weapons thing, I was using it as an example that I could use, that is why I am asking you for ideas / advice.

If you want to make any changes and recommendations they please post them, I will read them with great interest. And since we play together your advice would be heavily informative to me.

But to answer in more detail, Yes there will be a definite spell system , so feel free to suggest a spell and effect and any advice on the Xp advancement front would be duely appreciated.

They use spell, it says that they choose special spells at certain levels and that they are like druids. As to XP, weapon, etc wait until he post the full class, he's just giving the highlights of the class primary special ability, its soon to question the class eficacy

By the way, it might not look like it, but I'm exited for this new class it just needs some fleshing out.

Also summoning dragons at low levels is fine, it should just be a category one or two and there should be a chance it gets angry and squashes the party.

If the priest can cast spells I think maybe:

charm dragon (like charm person only with dragons)
Detect dragon
poly-morph self(dragon)
growth of dragons?
and so on.
